My husband and I spent three weeks in Thailand for our honeymoon and, unbeknownst to us, our time in Chiang Mai coincided with the Loy Krathong festival.

There were parades, night markets, beauty pageants, and people out every night celebrating. While the sky lanterns are amazing, what really enchanted us were the floating lanterns that were sent down the river.

Basically, they are rafts traditionally made from the leaves and wood of banana trees. The rafts are decorated with flowers, a candle, an incense stick and people often tuck in a coin. The candles and incense are lit and the krathong is placed in the river to float away. Thousands of these float and meander their way down the waterway and, combined with the floating lanterns in the sky, make an unforgettable sight.

I hope to take our kids to Loy Krathong as well.
