June 26, 2013, in Oakland, Calif., the day of the Supreme Court decisions to reverse DOMA and Prop 8, felt alight with fiery purpose. Though the Castro District across the bridge in San Francisco saw massive street parties (and at least one enormous celebratory blow-up penis), the love, joy, and sense of community at Oakland’s block party was palpable. The mayor served up sheet cake, kids drew chalk hearts on the sidewalk, and oh, the dancing.
